Global steel demand set to edge up in 2026 — what it means for construction buyers

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) released its Short Range Outlook in April 2026, forecasting that global steel demand will grow 0.3% in 2026 to about 1,724 million tonnes, then accelerate to 2.2% growth in 2027. The recovery is led by infrastructure-driven construction and stronger developing markets.

For construction-hardware buyers, the numbers point to a steadier — not overheated — 2026. The United States is projected to grow 1.7%, supported by public infrastructure programmes and a gradual housing recovery; the EU and UK are forecast at 1.3%, helped by infrastructure and defence spending; and India remains the fastest-growing major market at 7.4%.

In practice, reinforcement steel, tie wire, welded mesh and fencing demand should stay firm through 2026 without the sharp price swings of recent years. For importers, that makes it a good window to lock specifications and container schedules early rather than chase spot availability.

Leeter supplies the reinforcement accessories that move with this construction demand — rebar tie wire, welded wire mesh, rebar chairs and anchors. Send your specification and target market and our export team will plan pricing and loading around your project timeline.
