Nails per square by shingle and pattern
Estimate from shingles per square × nails per shingle — it is more reliable than working from weight.

320 and 480 are the industry round figures for 3-tab and are safe to headline. For architectural shingles the pieces are bigger, so the geometry gives a lower count — quote the real ~260/~390 but note many crews still order 320/480 to be safe.
Divide by 3 for nails per bundle: about 107 nails per bundle at the 4-nail pattern, or about 160 at 6-nail. Confusing nails-per-bundle with nails-per-square (a factor of 3) is a classic ordering error.
The 4 vs 6 nail rule is code, not preference
Under IRC R905.2.6, the minimum is 4 fasteners per strip shingle, rising to 6 where the design wind speed is high (the threshold usually cited is above 110 mph). Every major shingle manufacturer — GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed — specifies 4 nails standard and 6 for high-wind or enhanced-warranty application, and the underlying wind-resistance tests are ASTM D3161 and D7158. Using 4 nails where 6 are required both fails the code and voids the wind warranty, so confirm the wind zone before you estimate.
Pounds of nails per square — order by count, not weight
Weight is the least reliable way to buy, because nails per pound swing hugely with material and shank: galvanized smooth-shank 1¼" runs roughly 150–200 per pound, ring-shank about 200 per pound, and aluminum over 600 per pound. The practical spread:

Don't forget underlayment, starter, hips and ridges
The field-shingle count above is not the whole order:
- Underlayment cap nails: synthetic underlayment or felt takes plastic-cap nails at roughly 6" on laps and 12" in the field — about 200–300 caps per square (≈240–250 typical), tightening in high wind. These are separate from shingle nails.
- Starter course: an extra nail line along every eave and rake — roughly the roof perimeter in linear feet.
- Hip and ridge caps: nailed individually, commonly 2 nails per cap (4 in high wind), along the full length of every hip and ridge.
- Waste: add 5–10% for cuts, valleys and mis-drives (10–15% on complex, cut-up roofs).
A worked feel for it: a 30-square roof at the 4-nail pattern is about 9,600 field nails — call it ~11,000 once starter, caps and waste are added.
A note on nail length
Length doesn't change the count, but it decides whether the fastening is valid: the nail must penetrate at least ¾" into the deck, or fully through sheathing thinner than ¾" (IRC R905.2.6), with a minimum 12-gauge shank and ⅜" head. That means 1" minimum, 1¼" typical on new decking, and 1½"–2" when nailing over existing shingles or thick/multi-layer decks.
Buying roofing nails for import
- Order by piece count per square, then multiply by squares and add ~10% for starter, caps and waste before converting to cartons.
- Match the pattern to the wind zone — spec 6-nail quantities for high-wind markets so crews aren't forced to under-fasten.
- State shank and material (electro or hot-dip galvanized, ring or smooth, or aluminum for coastal), because they change both holding power and the nails-per-pound in your carton math.
- Coil vs hand-drive: most production roofing is coil-nailed — confirm collation and coil count if your market runs nailers.

How many roofing nails do I need per square?
About 320 nails per square for a standard 3-tab roof at 4 nails per shingle (roughly 80 shingles per square), or about 480 at the 6-nail high-wind pattern. Architectural shingles are larger, so the true count is nearer 260 or 390, though many crews order 320/480 to be safe. Add roughly 10% on top for starter strip, hip and ridge caps, and waste.
How many roofing nails are in a bundle?
Divide the per-square figure by three, since three bundles make a square. That is about 107 nails per bundle at the 4-nail pattern and about 160 at the 6-nail pattern for 3-tab shingles. Don't confuse nails-per-bundle with nails-per-square — they differ by a factor of three, a common cause of ordering a third too few.
When do I need 6 nails per shingle instead of 4?
Wherever the design wind speed is high — the threshold commonly cited is above 110 mph — building code (IRC R905.2.6) and the shingle manufacturers require 6 nails per shingle rather than 4. The 6-nail pattern is also required to keep many wind warranties valid. In normal wind zones, 4 nails per shingle is the minimum.
How many pounds of roofing nails per square?
Roughly 1.6–2.2 lb per square at 4 nails and 2.4–3.2 lb at 6 nails for galvanized steel nails — but the weight varies widely because aluminum nails run over 600 per pound versus about 150–200 for steel. Order by piece count rather than weight, and use pounds only to work out carton and shipping quantities.
What counts as a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof area — a 10 ft by 10 ft patch — and is the unit roofers estimate in. Three bundles of standard shingles cover one square. It is not a square foot and not a bundle, which is the most common misunderstanding when translating a roof size into a nail order.
